Brooklyn Publishers

David Burton
Senior Editor
Brooklyn Publishers
1841 Cord Street

Odessa, TX, 79762

Brooklyn Publishers is actively looking for material for its new catalog. We always need material suitable for high school students: duets, one-acts, monologues, full-length plays with large casts (the more roles for women the better), no musicals. Starting this fall, we will also carry material geared for adults. We're especially looking for scripts that we can market to community theatres. Comedies and mysteries are always good (we're not taking musicals). We'll be happy to look at one-acts, ten-minute plays, and full-length plays. If you have plays that have won awards or gotten good notices, those things are a big plus when it comes to marketing a script.

Send scripts to David Burton, our senior editor at Brooklyn Publishers, either via e-mail to brookpublishing@aol.com (Word, .rtf, or .pdf files would be fine) or by snail mail

(Prefers e-mail, but either way is fine.) Be sure to include production and award history. www.brookpub.com (the site is getting a complete revamp before our new catalog releases this fall).

Emerging Playwright Award

F

Urban Stages

NY

Established in 1986, URBAN STAGES' Emerging Playwright Award has been presented to the best of new, innovative playwrights whose works speak to the whole of our society. Urban Stages' on-going mission is to develop and produce new, exciting multi-cultural works that are issue-oriented.

We prefer full length plays for submission. No translations or adaptations. On RARE occasions, Urban Stages will consider exceptional musicals and one-act plays that fit our mission. We do, however, consider plays for younger audiences for our outreach program. Cast size is limited to no more than nine actors. Before production of the award winning play, a contract will be signed between the playwright and the company. This contract is approved by the Dramatists Guild.

PRIZE: Staged production in New York City and $500 in lieu of royalties

New Works Of Merit Playwriting Contest 2004

New Works of Merit Playwriting Contest accepts and encourages exciting new works that:
1) Support peace and social justice 2) Enhance self-realization 3) Foster new understanding of minority issues that focus on racial, ethnic and gender discrimination both in the United States and abroad 4) Shed new light on religious, spiritual, and cultural differences and issues 5) Educate to gain further insight into healthy social/emotional living 6) Give people worthy objectives upon which to concentrate ** While recognizing the obvious intentions in the categories above, examples of the following premises should be applied to all the categories as well: A play about the hardships and horrors of war IS a play that supports peace. A play that exposes social injustice, without the intent of making a statement FOR social justice, IS a play that supports social justice. A play that exposes the absurdity of over-indulgence in trivial pursuits IS a play that supports worthy objectives upon which to concentrate. We, as writers, have been given a precious gift. Let us use that gift to create powerful, heart-felt new works that not only entertain, but also educate, enlighten and uplift humanity.
CONTEST AWARDS: 1st Place Award: $300 and a reading as indicated below.* 2nd Place Award: a reading as indicated below.* 3rd Place Award: a reading as indicated below.* *All readings will be at the Thirteenth Street Repertory Theatre, New York City during the winter of 2003/2004. Ship your play by email

Colorado

Send us your 10 minute plays and see your script on the web!

Award winners will remain on our contest page for at least one month or until we find a new play that deserves publication.  And, at the end of the year, we'll select the best of 2003 and the possibility of being included in our annual Colorado Quickies production, an evening of 10-minute plays.

Prefer that all scripts be in Microsoft Word format (though most formats will work).   It isn't necessary to resend your script for each month's contest, but you can send a different script each month.  Only one script per playwright per month will be accepted.

Please note: because of the number of scripts received, we can't provide a critique of your play. Sorry.

Email your scripts to Ken Crost at kcrost@earthlink.net.
