Monthly.  Lean & Mean Writers & Directors is an opportunity for theatre artists to take a chance and collaborate on 30 minutes of raw theatre every month. After a show is over, participants for the upcoming Project 30 put their name in a hat. First the writers are chosen, then the directors, then the actors; all having been grouped into 5 or 6 casts that will each stage a 5 or 6 minute play in 3 weeks. The writers have 1 week to complete their scripts that will all be about a pre-chosen theme/topic. Past Project 30 themes include: taking a huge risk, succumbing to the power of fugly and getting your heart stomped on. Typically the writer will have to include other pre-chosen, random elements like a whistled rendition of "Oh What A Beautiful Morning" or a text message or a dramatically timed burp. The directors and casts have 2 weeks or more precisely (and stipulated), 9 hours of rehearsal plus one dress rehearsal, before performing at a Lower East Side bar, where all the plays are set. Project 30 is a monthly opportunity to risk, to go balls to the wall, in front of a crowd of sweaty, drunken people. Project 30 began in the winter of 2005 and over 500 actors, directors and writers have participated in it since then.

Desperate Act

F-1-T

NYC

#

Desperate Act, a new theatrical production company, is accepting submissions of original scripts for upcoming NYC productions. Most interesting are bold, provocative plays that embrace imagination and theatricality in the service of telling powerful stories, stories that draw a line from the experiences of individuals to the larger patterns common to human experience, that shine a broad light on the small events in a life or that examine big stories in very personal ways, stories told with humor, pathos or any combination of both. If you are a writer interested in forming a strong artistic partnership to create meaningful theatre for our times please send an electronic copy of script along with a brief cover letter outlining your background and artistic goals to Daniel Elias Cohen. Scripts of any length are acceptable for submission. The Detroit Repertory Theatre welcomes new plays for production at our 194-seat, proscenium stage theatre. Our New Playwrights' Program is not a competition, festival, workshop or staged reading program. We consider plays writers feel are ready for production, not development. We are interested in issue-oriented plays (a comedic approach is fine); 5 to 7 characters, no double casting; and we avoid plays that require children. Each season we produce at least one original work. Submit script, bound in folder with cast list and numbered pages, SASE for return.

Please be sure to have your script formatted according to their script style sheet.  Looking for scripts that can be used in worship services to focus the attention of worshipers on specific themes or life issues that the pastor can then address in the sermon or message that follows.

Sketches should be from 4 to 7 minutes long and use 1 to 6 characters.  Include a statement of purpose, time requirements, list of characters, prop list and any unusual sound or light requirements.  Scripts should be sensitive to the unchurched. Avoid Christian-club jargon and insider church terminology.  Must have broad appeal to both evangelical and mainline audiences.  Most of our scripts are not obviously religious in nature. Rather they pose human situations that can be addressed from the pulpit following the sketch.  No elaborate staging or costumes. Problems should be identified without sarcasm or overly critical tones (hope-based vs. critique-based). We do not want scripts that scold the audience or try to shame the viewers. Scripts that ridicule the hypocrisy of Christians are not for us.  Avoid didactic lines. Specifically, avoid making "less spiritual" characters mere foils who present questions and/or problems for "more spiritual" characters to resolve as "teachers."  Prefer everyday situations to extreme situations. Remember that there is enough drama, whether painful or humorous, in most people’s daily lives. For example, the temptation to tell a lie is much more common than the temptation to kill someone. Build your scripts around situations most people encounter in the normal course of living.  Avoid predictable endings. Prefer instead a conclusion that is unexpected but still a reasonable extension of the theme of the sketch.
