Applicants must live in the New York City metro area and be able to write lyrics as well as dialogue. Small stipend, to be determined, for participation. Submit short samples that are most representative of your work as a lyricist and bookwriter. Submit bound script, application, synopsis, bio & resume, SASE for return, if desired. Submit lyric samples and recordings and/or sheet music if available. This year we will pair eighteen musical theater writers, nine composers and nine librettists, give them a theme and a week to brainstorm, write, rewrite, cast, rehearse, and produce a single ninety-minute musical in our brand-new, sparkly theater on Chrystie Street. The Project Footlight festival is a camp for emerging musical theater writers that focuses on the developmental process and the art of collaboration. The festival asks participating artists how we unify a work across a collection of different artistic perspectives while always keeping the audience in mind. We especially encourage those composers or writers from other genres and those pushing the boundaries of musical theater to apply. In keeping with the laboratory environment of Dixon Place, Project Footlight seeks to attract and cultivate new voices in musical theater while sponsoring a unique work of art. Project Footlight will begin on Friday, January 30 and will end with two shows, one on Friday, February 6 and the other on Saturday, February 7 in the new Dixon Place state-of-the art theater located at 161 Chrystie Street. The festival will pay all artists a stipend and provide directors, actors, a pianist, and rehearsal space.

NO FEE. Dear Playwright Friends, We (Christianna Nelson and Stephanie Gilman) are producing something called The Bad Play Festival. It will be one night only on Thursday, March 5th, 7PM at New York Theatre Workshop (NYTW), 79 East 4th Street New York, NY) Free, No reservations necessary. We are seeking submissions for the festival. The shorter the better. Please, no more than 10 minutes. What do you hate about theatre? We are seeking your good-humored interpretation of what YOU think is bad. What bothers you. What turns you off. What's cliche, and overdone. AND, it should make you laugh. Which might be a contradiction. Oh well. Don't worry about wacky stage directions, or any unusual requirements. We will make everything work, one way or another. We can offer no stipend. You don't have to be in attendance, although we'd love to have you there for the festivities. And there will be beer. You can feel free to use a pseudonym if you wish. Casting is TBA, and will be determined by us, the producers of the festival. Why are we doing this? For Fun. More thoughts on why: What is good? What is bad? Can bad be good? When people try to make something bad will they end up making something good? Deadline for submissions: January 5th This is NOT a co-production with NYTW. We just get to use their studio space.
Yes, we know that this has been done before. We don't care!!!

BloomfieldArts.org is proud to present the North Jersey New Found Theatre Festival. This festival will be presenting original works of writers in February 2009. They are seeking original scripts (plays and musicals) from writers in the Tri-State area. The festival will commence on weekends in February at several different Bloomfield Arts locations: Broad Street Playhouse, Broadway Performing Arts School, the Multi-Media Arts Center, New Jersey School of Dramatic Arts, Oakeside Cultural Center, and the Westminster Arts Center. Those submissions chosen for the festival will be presented in readings and workshop performances that are open to the public. Each performance will end in a talk-back with the creative team in the hope that the writers will use it as a learning tool as they continue working on their craft. The "Best of Show" chosen by the committee of the entire festival will be given the opportunity to produce a one night only full production of their piece at one of the venues.

Planet Connections Festivity will strive to produce productions with an overall message or cause relating to activism and charity works. Submitting playwrights and producers should understand that this is an overall umbrella theme which can be far reaching and encompass many aspects. To that endeavor we will accept many scripts on various themes. We are also accepting a certain number of "non-theme" productions. However we will be asking these "non-theme" productions to support a cause of their choice by mentioning in their programs how to get involved. This "cause" does not have to relate to their production in any way. For example, you could choose to do the Odd Couple but in your program you devote a paragraph to animal rights issues. So if your production doesn't seem to support any particular cause, don't worry! We'll still help you fight for the causes you believe in.

Women in History: "The Woman I Want to Be" Monologues

The Cleveland Royalty Court invites playwrights to submit 2- 3 minute monologues/ scenes for our "Women In History: The Woman I Want to Be" project. We are asking for short monologues and scenes that can be strung together to become an evening of celebrating history and events that have affected the lives of the many. Our primary group of participants is 11- 14 years old so all material must be appropriate. Material may be from a larger work as long as it stands alone well. Produced or unproduced, unpublished or published (if royalties may be highly reduced or waived) we are open to what you have. We are interested in women from any period of history (US preferred but not limited to) with a strong story to tell. There is a talented group of seamstresses waiting in the wings so costuming is not a huge issue but we will have limited to no sets, lights, or sound. Here is a very general breakdown of our demographics: 1 African American, late teens, public speaking experience; 3 Caucasians, early teens, public speaking, theatre/ dance experience; 4 Caucasians, tweens, no experience; 3 African Americans, pre-schoolers, no experience; 2 Caucasians, pre-schoolers, no experience We ask for this to be considered in the composition of the monologues and scenes. Semi- dramatic and comedic scenes are preferred. As part of our "Leadership Academy" program the girls will research the historical figures highlighted and compose bios for them for the program, so lesser known figures are appreciated as well. We will select up to 10 monologues/ scenes to complete our program. Selected playwrights will receive a program bio, copy of program, and DVD of the production. Production is scheduled to be part of our SWAN day program. I realize this is very specific and picky but I hate to reject a wonderful scene simply because I cannot cast it. I am happy to answer any questions about our requirements. Electronic submissions only, subject line "WIH" or "Women in History"

NO FEE. The WPS is a developmental program dedicated to providing a working forum for the unique and underserved voice of women writing for the theatre today. Each season 3 new plays are selected for a collaborative workshop process, with a professional director and actors, which takes place over a period of a approximately 1 week, allowing time for the playwright to hear their work and make any adjustments they would like to make. At the end of the rehearsal, a staged reading of the play is presented at CSC (50 miles w. of NYC) for our regional audiences, giving our audiences larger exposure to new work, as well as offering the playwright an opportunity to get feedback from the audience during the development process. Playwrights selected for the workshops process will receive a $250 honorarium. Additional funds for travel and housing are available for one playwright each season.

Scripts must be original one-act plays no longer than 30 (thirty) minutes in length (playing time). The play’s content must involve the theme of this year’s Marathon: (re)defining America. We are seeking creative responses to the exploration of what it means to be American and how that meaning has evolved over time. Plays need not be a literal explanation of the theme, but rather should use the phrase as a starting point to investigate the cultural, psychological, sociological and/or historical makeup of our country. The platform themes are broadly articulated and might easily accommodate a range of plays from the intimate and personal to the global and political. Submitted plays should be as yet un-realized in full production and unpublished, although plays already slated for production in the coming year or previously workshopped at other venues are perfectly acceptable. Along with the script, we ask that you submit a synopsis, a character or roles breakdown, and a brief bio or resume. CTC is accepting scripts from December 1, 2008 until January 31, 2009. Programming decisions will be made by March 31. Materials submitted without a self-addressed stamped envelope cannot be returned. We are unable to accept submissions of sample pages or incomplete scripts. We apologize in advance that staffing limitations may prevent us from responding to all inquiries and submissions.
