We seek a new, full-length, original, unproduced and unpublished play in its final stages of development that would benefit from a week-long workshop at Coe. No musicals, adaptations, translations or collaborations will be considered. This is an excellent development opportunity for emerging, professional playwrights. Spend a week in residence workshopping your play with a professional director, faculty, students and community theatre artists. For the playwright: We want to provide the resources and the time and space that will enable you to experiment with and further develop your play. In addition to helping you take your new work to the next level, we will also offer you teaching experience conducting a master class with our students. Finally, you will be given opportunities to connect with theatre professionals in eastern Iowa. For our students: This is an opportunity for our students to meet and interact with a working playwright, and to observe how plays evolve. Our students will be involved with the workshop either directly as participants, or indirectly as observers.

The Building Stage presents Objects in Motion
11/15
other
Chicago, IL
#
A festival of performance at the Building Stage, March 2009. Drawing from puppetry and toy theater, abstract work and simple narration, traditional forms and newly invented ones, this festival will present short works from a variety of perspectives, representing a wide range Chicago performing and creative artists. From the collection of works submitted, we will create a series of programs featuring object-based pieces of any length up to forty minutes. The Objects: They can be two-dimensional images or actual three-dimensional things. They can be found objects or made specifically for performance. The Motion: We are not creating installation art or sculpture. Movement (change over time) is essential. Because objects are inherently inanimate, the performance requires at least some interaction with a human being: the performer(s) can be hidden from the audience, in plain view but ignored by the audience, or play an equal role alongside the objects. Some Examples: A story told with two dimension cut-outs…perhaps photocopied from books? What brings these to life? What creates character? Drama? An abstract ballet featuring three watering cans, an egg-beater, and some vinyl flooring? How do they move? How do they interact? Is there a story? Perhaps a moving Jackson Pollack painting set to music? Or maybe a simple puppet show of your favorite episode of the Brady Bunch. Use this opportunity to make something that excites you. Please contact us with a simple description of what you propose. Does it exist or would you be creating it for this event? Who are you? What is your background? Who are your collaborators? If your piece is very small, such as in toy theater, and a normal theater set-up won’t work, let us know how you’d envision presenting the piece. How long is the piece? How much set-up time do you think you would need? How much time to break-down your piece? Please limit this initial submission to 500 words or less. And a simple image or two.
