Santa Fe Performing Arts Playwright's Competition was developed to support American Playwrights. The competition is not merely a competition of words, but a venue for recognition and a demonstration of appreciation - truly a celebration of the writer's contribution. SFPA and many other theatre companies around the country with similar programs, support playwrights and ensure the future of American Theatre. Without the writers, the actors would have nothing to say. Submissions are limited to unproduced new American plays and must be postmarked by the first of September of each year. Send play synopsis and character break-down. Full scripts upon request only.

Grants for artists of any discipline: a series of six mentorship + project grant opportunities. We are opening up the spots to six different artistic disciplines, and are trying to get as wide a spectrum of candidates as possible. We look forward to many quality applicants, and would love to have some playwrights and performance artists in the mix to truly shake up the notion of what "the book" can be and how its content can be expressed. It's a great opportunity, $1500 to support a project plus a huge amount of free education and workshops. There's no fee for application, and we do not limit participation for consideration on any basis other than the eligibility guidelines set in place by the grant itself (emerging artists only, must be MN resident, etc.).

Playwrights must reside IN FLORIDA. The Valencia Community College theater program is accepting plays for its annual Florida Playwrights competition, which has been held every year since 1991. The winning play will be staged in April 2009, as part of Valencia’s regular subscription series. Send the first 15 pages of no more than two never-before-produced manuscripts. Electronic submissions are requested. They may be sent to Valencia’s artistic director, Julia Gagne (see below). Scripts must be original, previously unproduced, full-length plays. (Scripts that have received staged readings may be submitted.) Collaborations are eligible, but children’s plays, musicals and adaptations are not. A panel of readers will evaluate the submitted excerpts and ask select writers to submit their full manuscripts. From those, one play will be chosen to be developed and workshopped with the playwright’s participation. The playwright will receive a stipend to cover travel and other expenses related to the production. The administrator of the competition plans to announce the winning play around December 1, 2008. The workshop process will begin in January 2009.

Last year's offerings included a portrayal of Santa's workshop as a fascist state, a white trash holiday pageant, in Whoosville, a chorus line of grim reapers, in g-strings, and a Patti Smithesque number sung by Santa's youngest daughter. Think more well-conceived "sketch comedy", than "one-act". Plays should be no more than 30 pages. Deadline for submissions is 9/30/08. Submissions can be made electronically or by snailmail.
