Fair Weather Friends

Worked my royal ass off last week. There was the whole outa town thing, the driving, the trying to keep life moving along at home while being gone, the cleanup of the mess when I got home, and then because I like to punish myself, I scheduled a get-together for tonight. It’s a culmination of a great, big, long project. Gather together fellow employees and celebrate accomplishment.

As usual, the dependable people were there as they always, always are. There were a few new faces to say hello and a few friends of friends dropping in. All in all a lovely evening. Yet at the end of it all, I got the oddest comment.

One guy says to me how much he’s loved this whole project, from beginning to end, and how proud he was to have been a part. Sweet, huh? But when we examine closer we see that what was initially a great help soon became arrogance and then finally total withdrawal – and I mean walkin’ off the project at it’s most crucial moment.

Since I missed out on getting a sugar-daddy when I was young enough to snag one, I’m going to have to keep going to that blankety-blank day-job. I was hoping for a profession where I could be proud. And obviously, it’s really easy to be in this one.

Well, I found out that my show won two awards at last week’s festival. That made the whole work-thing a lot easier to take.
